CALDWELL COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — A former teacher whose smiling mugshot was seen around the world as she stood accused of having a sexual relationship with a student has submitted a guilty plea to a Caldwell County judge.

Sarah Fowlkes, who taught anatomy, physiology and environmental systems at Lockhart High School, was arrested on March 20, 2017, on a charge of engaging in sexual contact with a 17-year-old male student.

Her attorney, Jason Nassour, said at the time she was smiling in her mugshot because she’s innocent.

According to the Caldwell County District Court, the judge has yet to accept her plea, which would result in four years of deferred adjudication, a type of probation.

Fowlkes, 28, was suspended by the Lockhart Independent School District after her arrest. Before working at Lockhart High, she was a teacher at Plum Creek Elementary School.

The Lockhart Police Department said at the time this was their first investigation involving allegations of a teacher’s inappropriate relationship with a student.
