ABILENE, Texas (BigCountryHomepage.com) – 16-year-old Garrett Talamentes came to the Taylor County Expo Center to not only compete at the Texas State High School Finals Rodeo as a team roper, but to bring back the lost-to-time tradition of the singing cowboy.

Big Country Homepage sat down with the talented Talamentes Tuesday morning, where he gave a special performance just for our audience.

Dry mesquite beans falling to the ground
Nothin better than when autumn rolls around
Leaves turn yellow and leave a naked tree
Bearin winter until the next years spring
The sun gets tired and closes for the day
Little cowdog snores the night away
Young cowboy looks up at the sky
He can’t wait to see the next July

He can’t wait to see the mornin’ sun come by
Why do all the flowers have to up and die
There’s a watering hole down the road
Where the bucks and the fawns and the does
Go to get their fill
There’s a big tree on top of the hill
If you climb it you can see that old rusty mill
And all the birds in the sky
Ol top hand joe looks over the land
That he owned up north of the rio grande
Where he burned his brand
It’s a whole other world you see when your on southern land

Sharp Spanish dagger reaches for sky
Mourning dove sits on a power line
Banded armadillo scurries along a trail
Thirsty coyote lookin a little frail
Family of whitetail cross a lonely road
Big mesquite lookin a little bowed
Band of big hogs walk out in the night
Big Ol bobcat lookin for a bite

Seems like the monsters only come out at night
Moonlight is all you get when you’re alone outside
There’s a watering hole down the road
Where the bucks and the fawns and the does
Go to get their fill
There’s a big tree on top of the hill
If you climb it you can see that old rusty mill
And all the stars in the sky
Ol top hand joe looks over the land
That he owned up north of the rio grande
Where he burned his brand
It’s a whole other world you see when your on southern land
