After an impressive 2017 season, the Merkel Badgers return their do-it-all man Jonah White for his senior year. Jonah was a huge part of Merkel's offense last year, when he compiled over 400 yards rushing with 4 touchdowns, and over 750 receiving yards with 9 touchdowns through the air.
Week 3 of the 2018 season gives another version of the Crosstown Showdown between the Abilene High Eagles and the Cooper Cougars. This is the 58th meeting between the two schools. Cooper leads the overall series with 33 wins. Abilene High is just ten back with 23, and they tied back in 1965. HOUSTON – The ACU Wildcats have been picked to finish seventh in the 2018 Southland Conference football standings, according to the preseason poll, which was released Thursday at the league's annual Media Day festivities.
We start with a old Big Country rivalry. The Hamlin Pied Pipers makes the trip east to Albany to take on the Lions in the District 7-2A Division I opener in Week 5. Albany is ranked 5th in the preseason. Hamlin is ranked 12th. Albany is picked to win the district with Hamlin hot on their heels.
The ACU Wildcats are trying to improve on their second straight two-win season as head coach Adam Dorrel goes into his second year leading the Wildcats. This season, the ACU offense will be led by sophomore quarterback Luke Anthony.
The De Leon Bearcats head into the 2018 season with very high expectations, as Texas Football Magazine pre-ranks the Bearcats 4th in the state for Class 2A Division 1 and are predicted to win District 7-2A. The Bearcats, led by Head Coach David Yeager, will head into the season with Yeager's son Kevin once again taking snaps under center after completing a monster 2017 campaign as a junior in which he threw for 3,054 yards and 43 TD's.
