The Comanche Indians are headed to the second round of the playoffs after a 42-30 win over Nocona thanks in part to their fierce rushing attack, a three-headed monster of Kade Mercer, Zach Rodriguez, and Trendon Morin. The trio rushed for a combined 283 yards and 6 rushing TD’s to push the Indians into the next round.
Head Coach Stephen Hermesmeyer said, “We pride ourselves on being able to run the football and move the sticks and get first downs. Our kids did a great job of executing Friday night, we went 3-and-out on the first series and punted, that was the only punt we had the whole night so credit our kids for adjusting and doing a great job taking care of the football.”
Kade Mercer said, “It boils down to our linemen getting their blocks and they did a great job with that and, when they open holes like they did, it was easy for us to run through.”
Trendon Morin said, “The run really worked, we passed the ball I think four times and I was 3 for 4 for 61 yards so that’s pretty good.”
The Indians will look to continue using their strength in the backfield in a power-against-power affair against a difficult Edgewood team this week for Round 2.
Hermesmeyer said, “Our gameplan is going to be to play great defense and try to limit the number of possessions they get and sometimes you do that in our scheme with our offense by maintaining the football and grinding out first downs and trying to play keepaway.”
Mercer said, “We’ve just got to keep a clear mind, last week we just went out there and we played. We didn’t really think about it, we just thought of it as another game and another time for us to go out and play together so I think just not getting too stressed about the game is a big factor.”
