The Abilene High Eagles hit the field on Monday morning ready to take on the 2018 football season.
Head Coach Del Van Cox said, “This year there’s no other excitement that you can have other than being out on the football field. All the work you’ve been doing since January and you get to do the enjoyable part of it and get ready for games, and games are right around the corner so that’s what’s exciting about it and we’re excited about getting it going.”
2017 was a tough one for the Eagles. Injuries plagued the team throughout the season, causing Abilene High to come away with just three wins. This year, they’re looking to get back on track.
Cox said, “Life’s all about getting back up, we’re working on learning the lessons that didn’t go well, learning the things that we did well. Hopefully the injury bug will stay away from us and we’ll learn our lessons and move on and get better.”
While no team wants injuries, many underclassmen got plenty of playing time, and the in-game experience they received last season is invaluable.
Cox said, “The experience that those guys got that early is going to help pay off later down the road. At the time, it’s kind of a thing you’ve got to grow and build on but now they know what the Friday night pace is so it’s going to be definitely a plus for us moving on.”
Abilene High has three full weeks of practice before they hit the road to take on Amarillo Tascosa in week one.
