ACU Baseball two days away from Opening Day

February 13th, 2019 - Opening day for college baseball is just two days away. The ACU Wildcats are entering the Rick McCarty era with a ton of questions. Dusty talked to Coach McCarty to see if he has any answers.

While MLB Pitchers and Catchers have officially reported to Spring Training, the ACU Wildcats baseball program is set to open a new chapter in its history Friday afternoon in Rick McCarty debut as Head Coach. The former pitching coach at Dallas Baptist has his work cut out for him, but the team in front of him features promise in 2019.

Head Coach Rick McCarty said, "We're going to be really careful with guys early on, you won't see us running guys anywhere near 100 pitches early. We'll try to build them into that, I think we know what they're capable of doing based on past performance."

McCarty looks to improve upon the 5-25 mark the Wildcats posted in the Southland Conference in 2018, and a big factor to improvement will be his emphasis on pitching. McCarty announced Tuesday transfer Spencer Chirpich will open the season on the hill Friday followed by Senior standout Derek Scott on Saturday.

McCarty said, "When you look at it you have a right-hander and a left-hander, anytime I think you can split those two on a Friday and Saturday, either which way, whether it's Friday a lefty and Saturday a righty or vice versa, they both earned it."

McCarty will call upon his pitchers to limit the amount of earned runs allowed this season. In 2018, the Wildcats were 17-9 when allowing 5 run or less. On the flipside, the Wildcats were 4-24 when opponents scored 6 runs or more,

McCarty said, "I know what they've thrown in practice and you get into a game and it depends on how stressful some innings may be. Ideally they get us in the 5th inning and ideally they get us there with the lead hopefully."

ACU opens the season this weekend with a four game series against Bryant. Game one is Friday at 3 at Scott Field.
