The Cooper Cougars’ ground game was unstoppable for the second week in a row, and they beat Lubbock Monterey 58-20 to open play in District 2-5A Division I.
Monterey scored first with 14 yard run by quarterback Coreon Bailey, but the Cougars took control of the game after that.
Rushing touchdowns by Aiden Thompson, Xavier Wishert, Noah Garcia, and Daelin Campos helped the Cougars dominate the night in Lubbock.
Thompson wasn’t asked to throw the ball often but when he did he was effective with a pair of touchdown passes, one to Nigel Williams in the 2nd quarter and the other to Campos in the third quarter.
Defensively the Cougars scored a touchdown and set up another, and Anthony Batrez led the charge. He picked up a fumble in the 2nd quarter and scored a touchdown. He followed that up with another fumble recovery in the third quarter that set up another score.
Cooper wins its second straight game. They are 1-0 in District 2-5A Division I play. The Cougars are 2-3 overall.
