Cooper Cougars Head Coach Cody Salyers has consistently found a way to reload his pitching rotation year-in, year-out.Head Coach Cody Salyers said, “It’s been like that every year it seems like. Year one I had Caleb Freeman, he leaves and then Austin Smith takes over and then he leaves and then Ender Freeman takes over so it’s been like that every year where a true number 1 steps up and leads the way.“
This year appears to be no different as Coach Salyers has Braiden Hill as his ace on the mound followed by Matthew Shira and Aiden Thompson who have stepped up this spring.
Salyers said, “Braiden’s done a great job this year, it’s a guy you can throw up there and you know you’re going to have a chance every single day he’s on the mound competing. Braiden’s done that so far but also Matthew Shira and Aiden Thompson have both stepped in and done a lot.“
Jacob Hummel said, “It feels great being able to catch him and help him out, it’s just amazing, and Shira is fun catching him because he likes competing, I like competing, we go at them.“
Matthew Shira said, “Going into the season, I knew I would get some innings on the mound but I was going in open minded trying to get some work in and just going to work on the mound and see what I can do for the team.“
The Cougars will continue to turn to their pitching rotation as they look to get over the hump in district play.
Hummel said, “This particular team is a lot of fun, it’s a great group of guys that are energized and want to play and want to be here.“
