Don’t hibernate on Baird Bears in 2018

The Baird Bears start the year picked to finish at the bottom of the district after going 1-9 in 2017.

2018 starts with new head coach Joel Baker taking over the program.

19 positions are filled with returning starters, and that fact, makes coach Baker happy.

He thinks people are sleeping on his Bears.

Baker said, “Here’s the deal, I think people are hugely underestimating us. I am hoping by the middle of district, or by the end of the year, people are going say, ‘We didn’t see that coming from Baird.’ Our offensive and defensive line are freshmen, sophomores and only a couple of juniors took a pounding last year. Whether they flipped coaches or not, they were gonna get better the next year just for the experience. I told them, ‘Y’all have the experience. We are just going to fine tune you, and you know the speed of the game. You know the physicality of the game.’ We’re gonna be better off in the long run.”

Jax Bellar is the top returner for Baird. He lead the team in rushing and tackling in 2017.

The Bears open up against Class 3A Grape Creek at the Bears’ Den.
