Four Cowgirls earn ASC awards

RICHARDSON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons’ women’s basketball team had four players recognized by the head coaches in the American Southwest Conference as the league announced its postseason awards.

Freshman Keilee Burke was named the American Southwest Conference West Division player of the year. She also earned a spot on the all-freshman team and was named second-team all-ASC West Division. She was second in the league in rebounding and blocked shots.

She was joined on the all-ASC West Division second team by junior guard Taylor Gaffney who led the Cowgirls with 13.3 points per game and also had 102 assists on the year.

Freshman guard Maria Fernandez was named to the all-freshman team and was named honorable mention all-ASC West Division after averaging 8.8 points and 3.2 assists per game.

Sophomore forward Karlea Ritchie was named honorable mention all-ASC West Division as well after averaging 8.0 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.

UMHB’s Hannah Holt was the player of the year in the ASC West, Allaira Jones of UMHB was the freshman of the year and Chandre Nunez of Sul Ross State was the newcomer of the year.


The head coaches of the teams vote on the awards and teams can’t vote for their own players.

Newcomer of the Year – Chandre Nunez, Sul Ross State
Defensive Player of the Year – Keilee Burke, Hardin-Simmons
Tri-Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year – Kaycie Dunkerley, Concordia Texas

Tri-Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year – Julissa Ibarra, Howard Payne
Tri-Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year – Jocelyne Roque, Sul Ross State
Coach of the Year – Mark Morefield, Mary Hardin-Baylor
