For the second straight season, the Hawley Bearcats are playing baseball after graduation.
Garrett Hewitt said, “It feels good because we’re a family and this is the time of year to do it, and hopefully we can get a little bit further than we did last year.”
It’s been a good time to be a Hawley Bearcat in the 2018-19 school year. The success started back in the fall, as the 10-2 Bearcat football team advanced to the fourth round of the playoffs, and now, the baseball team is in the same position, as they get ready to play in their region semifinal series.
Jamie Seago said, “They’re tough minded kids, but a lot of that comes from our success in football. Basketball season they struggled a little bit but they fought back and got in and I think that success has come over here and hopefully we’re going to make that even greater going into football season next year.”
Dylan Frazier said, “We have really really good team chemistry, we’ve all grown up playing since we were five, six years old, in flag football, tee-ball, little dribblers, so we’ve all known each other, we all hang out even when we’re not out here on the baseball field or football field or the court, we’re hanging out at someone’s house doing something. We have that strong bond, which I think helps a lot out on the field.”
Hawley meets up with New Deal in the region semifinals this week, the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last season. So what’s the approach as they meet again on Friday?
Frazier said, “Just play Hawley Bearcat baseball. I have no doubt in my mind that we’ll do it.”
Hawley starts the series with New Deal on Friday at 1 p.m. at ACU.
The series continues on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Lubbock Cooper.
