McMurry and Hardin-Simmons are both sending a golfer to the NCAA Division III tournament next week.
McMurry junior Brendon Lowrance is getting a chance to finish a great season competing against some of the best in the nation, and he’s happy that HSU’s Luke Smith is joining him in Kentucky.
“It’s going to be a really cool experience, we’ve talked about maybe trying to play practice rounds together, I’m sure we’re going to be seeing a lot of each other there,” Brendon Lowrance said. “I think it shows a lot about this region, three of the six individuals that were picked were from Texas across the country.”
“We might not get the same recognition as some of these other areas in other conferences, but we still have the same caliber of players that everybody has. Just need to show everybody what we’ve got,” Lowrance said.
Hardin Simmons senior Luke Smith had the best season in the Cowboys non-scholarship era.
He averaged just over a 73 per round and is first team All-American Southwest Conference, and he’s a semifinalist for the Nicklaus Award.
Smith is also the first Cowboy to go to Nationals since 2004.
“It’s really an honor to be selected, it feels like I really accomplished the goals I set out when I got here at school, I guess I’m just really excited to go there,” Luke Smith said. “What I’m really looking forward to is getting to play every player in the country that’s better than me or ranked higher than me, so that’s some motivation, I’m just excited to soak in the experience.”
The Division III Tournament starts next Tuesday. They are playing the three day tournament in Nicholasville, Kentucky.
