The Albany Lady Lions are less than 24 hours from playing in the State Semifinals for the third time in school history.
Dusty Baker went up to Albany to talk to them as they prepare for the defending state champions, Bells.
Head Coach Jimmy Fuentes said, “This is what you work for. For a lot of people it’s a dream, and then for others you get a shot at it like I did earlier on. I thought if we could win district and get on a role after district then we’d have a shot at getting there and it’s a little surreal but we are there and we are ready to go. “
The Albany Lady Lions are heading to state for the first time for this group led by 6 seniors. They head into state coming off a wild Game 2 in the Regional Finals where they held off Petrolia, 21-17.
Fuentes said, “You know, right when I think that I’ve seen it all with this team this year, something else happens. Petrolia goes on that run when we’re up 16-1 but, regardless, these girls pull it out somehow, some way they finish it.”
Senior Baley Green said, “I think we have a lot of confidence, we know our players are athletes. We know each player can take of their job and can take care of each other.”
Albany is now set to take on Bells in the state tournament.
Fuentes said, “They look a lot like us, they are pretty athletic, they’ve got some pretty big sticks in their lineup, 1 through 9 can hit just like our kids can, they play great defense.”
Albany headed out Tuesday morning for state. Game 1 is set for Wednesday at noon in Austin when the Lady Lions take on Bells.
Green said, “Every practice we come to, we’re focused, we know what we have to get done and we do that.”
Elia Hebel said, “We knew coming into this season that we had a good team and we knew that if we just accomplished the goals that we set at the beginning of the year, we could build up to state. We’re just ready for Bells. It’s going to be a slugfest.”
A win for the Lady Lions Wednesday would be the programs first at the state tournament.
