ABILENE, Texas – Louisiana College rallied to stun Hardin-Simmons 6-5 in 12 innings in American Southwest Conference action at Hunter Field on Sunday.
John Clift had given the Cowboys a great start on the mound and there were two outs and nobody on in the ninth when he allowed a pair of singles. Hayden Day came in looking for the save but Brodie Falgoust beat out a groundball to shortstop to load the bases and Brady Atkins had an RBI two-run single to right to cut the deficit to 5-3.
Taylor McMackin came on and Christian Vandergrift hit a slow roller to third that the Cowboys had no play on that made it 5-4 and then Clayton Noakes hit a ground ball to third that was bobbled and dropped and the throw to first was late and the tying run scored. McMackin got out of the inning.
HSU had a chance to win the game in the ninth with the bases loaded but the Wildcats got out of the jam. The game remained scoreless until a Keelyn Johnson RBI single to give LC a 6-5 lead.
HSU appeared to have a walk off home run by Dylan Sweeney but it was ruled just foul as he was rounding first base. The Cowboys didn’t score to end the game.
The Cowboys had jumped to a 5-1 lead through four innings. Cade Johnson had an RBI double in the first, Jamie Dominguez an RBI double in the second Matthew Lillard had a two-run double in the third and Johnson homered in the fourth. It was the last run of the game for HSU as the Wildcats shut the Cowboys down for the final eight innings.
Dominguez had three hits for the Cowboys and Pedersen led the Wildcats with four hits.
Clift was solid going 8 2/3 innings allowing three runs on eight hits and striking out seven. Hayden Day allowed two runs and Taylor McMackin worked three and one-third innings but took the loss to fall to 3-3 on the year.
Andrew Robinson, who was undefeated on the year coming into the game, left after allowing five runs in four innings. Caleb Prejean kept the Wildcats in the game with four and one-third innings of scoreless relief. Phillip Vidrine earned the win with three and two-third innings of scoreless relief to improve to 5-2 on the year.
The Cowboys are now 18-15 overall and 12-7 in ASC action. LC improved to 25-8 overall and 12-6 in ASC play. The Cowboys play at Southwestern on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
It was senior day for the six HSU seniors – Gunny Evans, Lillard, Danny-David Linahan, Tyler Pippin, Brady Roper and Sweeney.
