Sweetwater heads into 2018 with questions

Sports

High school football is back at the Mustang Bowl as the Sweetwater Mustangs took the field for the first practice of the 2018 season.

Logan King said, “Coming out here, we don’t know how we’re going to look. In the spring it was different, no helmets, we’re about to have pads in a couple of days, but coming out here now, we’re seeing who came to play, who wants to play, who wants a spot, who’s going to be competitive, who’s going to show up and play on Friday nights.”

Alex Gallegos said, “Everyone expects big things from us, we’ve got to fill some big shoes. Kobe, Kiante, CT, they’re doing their own thing now. I’ll be playing for the whole community, for my team, for my parents, it’s just a great feeling.”

Mary Margaret Johnson said, “Head coach Ben McGehee’s second year here in Sweetwater begins with a lot of question marks. After graduating a very successful senior class last year, the Mustangs return only two starters on both sides of the ball. So a lot of spots are ready to be filled, and Coach McGehee hopes that these young guys step up to get ready to fill them.”

Coach McGehee said, “It’s fun, we started in the spring with competition drills that we did throughout the entire spring, because we knew they’re going to have to compete, every one of them for every spot. We ramped it up a little early on that stuff so it’s going to be exciting to see which kids step up and compete and win.”

At the beginning of practice, Coach McGehee told his team to not worry about the color of their jersey, because this first week is just about getting better as a team.

McGehee said, “A lot of our answers will come when we put the pads on. Right now, we just want to get out here and get reps and get touches in guys hands, learn the new defensive scheme with a new defensive coordinator and things like that.”

Markus Meneses said, “It’s a brand new team, so everything has to come together. We still have some dry spots but a lot of it’s still coming together.”

The Mustangs have some time to come together before their first game against Cisco in week one.
